Vocational Training
Uganda

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has had a devastating impact on the lives of people particularly the youth. After the deaths of AIDS-infected parents, the task of raising these children mostly falls on the aging and financially burdened grandparents and relatives, who find it nearly impossible to meet the additional obligations. Most affected HIV/AIDS orphaned children therefore do not get enough of the educational, spiritual, social, economic development and health care programs they need. As a consequence, the majority often drop out of school and the young girls end up in prostitution, while boys turn to begging on the city streets.  A long-term solution is therefore needed to address the plight of the affected HIV/AIDS orphans and Disadvantaged Youth.

The Empowerment Center will comprise of a residential Vocational Training Institute (VTI) and a Health Clinic. The Center will provide a supportive and nurturing environment in which affected HIV/AIDS orphans and Disadvantaged Youth will learn and acquire technical skills for preparing themselves to become productive members of society by being self-reliant. The training will cover demand-driven occupations for individuals throughout East and Central Africa.

Courses will include:

- Carpentry and joinery
- Bricklaying and concrete practice
- Agricultural mechanics
- Art and crafts
- Tailoring and cutting
- Electrical installation and fitting
- Sheet metal and plumbing
- Ties and dye
- Painting and decoration
- Automotive repair and maintenance
